Revolting: In grisly rapture

26/05/11  ||  revenant

Hahahaha… oh man, before I start this review off I just want to say I fucken love that album cover.

Ok, so this must be what, album number 7,000* now for Rogga? I have to say I am in awe of how prolific this guy is with his death metal. I must admit I haven’t checked out enough of his back catalogue (plus I still have that last Demiurg album on my “to get” list) to refer to myself as a guru on the matter, but from what I do know I get the impression that the Revolting albums sit within the top half of than man’s achievements. And, judging from the quality of this new release, it’s probably a fair assessment.

Describing the sound of this album’s should be the simplest thing I’ve ever had to write for Global Domination. Hell, I can probably do it with my eyes closed. In fact I will. Old schiil Swedish feath metak. Hmmm… that probably didn’t work as well as it should, but it’s pretty obvious what I meant there. It’s a sound we’re all familiar with: the classic fuzzy guitar tone, deep throated growls, grinding rhythms and grooves topped off with the typical melody that makes Swedish death metal so damn fucking good to listen to.

I know this isn’t the most original sounding album going around but to draw that out as a criticism would be missing the point altogether. This album rejoices in the traditional Swedish sound, celebrating it with gusto. The music jumps from dirty groove to macabre melody with vicious ease. Rogga’s growls suit the music perfectly, and the rhythm section is spot on. Who the fuck cares that this is a well trodden path? The music is good and that is all that counts.

As far as stand out tracks go, album opener “Hell in Dunwich” and second track “The Plague of Matul” are the two that stand out most to me. The second, in particular, is a track I like to go back to and repeat a few times. That groovy breakdown 40 seconds in is just fucking magic. But it’s not the stand out tracks that make this worthwhile, it’s the consistency of the work as a whole that impresses the most.

In all, this is a rock solid release. If you have a Swedeath itch that needs scratching, this is the album for you. It’s nothing new and certainly won’t be heralded as genre changing, but it’s nonetheless a strong album that rejoices in a classic sound that should be celebrated. If you have room on your shelf for another old schiil Swedish feath metak album, then you sure fucking can’t go wrong with this.

7,5
